Sooooo.... you're wondering how to get off the couch & out the door to exercise? You're not alone, although it may feel like it. Aren't we all looking for an exercise that we can do that delivers results & can be done happily for a lifetime? I hear you sister!
I had to learn how to get off the couch again too. WHAT I DISCOVERED IGNITED A PASSION. Here's what happened... I was a high school phys ed teacher & also got to row in the Olympic Games. Thirteen years after that, 1989, I was the victim of a car accident.

The accident put me on the sidelines for over 10 years...I just wanted to be out of pain, walk normally & be my energetic, productive self again. Back pain, balance issues, fatigue, weight gain, depression (maybe you can relate)... kept me from doing the things I had planned for my future. Physios, chiropractors & counsellors helped, but would I ever be my old healthy self again?
I was determined to get healthy again but IT TOOK SOOOO LONG without a plan, a method, or support; in July 2009 I was at the end of my rope, at a stale mate. I felt like giving up.
But sometimes unexpected things that come "out of the blue" contain the solution!
In July 2009 I was chosen to be one of the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games ceremonial torch bearers. Little did I know that this would change my life in a way I could not even imagine!
Even though I only had to carry the torch 400 meters, organizers encouraged us to commit to a fitness program. So I set out to find an exercise to do. My purpose was to look good on TV carrying the torch! I was so done with things like step class & weight circuit & adages like "no pain, no gain"! Been there, done that! I needed something that felt good. Then I heard about POLE WALKING… didn’t know anything about it, but it seemed like an easy thing I could do since I was already walking. Duh!
I bought the only available poles...hiking poles. With my athletic background, I figured out what I had to do, taking into account all the limitations/injuries I currently had. I was able to imagine I was cross-country skiing & started pushing the poles behind me in rhythm with my walking steps. All my athletic training helped me persist & find the best way to do it. I worked at it until it flowed & felt rhythmic like I was flying. I loved it. My background gave me insight & patience so that my beat-up body could heal & be supported by the skill of Nordic walking. Inch by inch I progressed!
Within six weeks, my friends started noticing how good my posture was looking. In about eight weeks, I had to get smaller jeans! Nice! The speed of results with such relatively little effort fascinated me. Finally, four months later, I carried the Olympic torch & hey, I looked good on TV!

The next day I walked without poles. It felt hard! I didn’t like it! What the heck? So the day after that, I went back to my pretend cross-country skiing style with poles.
I began researching everything I could find about Nordic Walking. Seems Finnish phys ed teach Leana Jaaskelainen developed walking exercises with poles for her students in 1966, while in 1979 Mauri Repo, head of the Finnish Cross Country ski team, developed walking with poles as an off-season training for his skiers. Then in the 1990’s, “Nordic Walking” became a huge fitness trend among the general population in Europe, still going strong today with over 50 million people participating regularly.
I discovered there was a ton of published research proving the benefits of Nordic Walking. Based on three weekly 30 minute sessions, Nordic Walking improves just about everything like: 1) uses 95% of body’s muscles, 2) burns 46% more calories than walking, 3) reduces back/shoulder/neck pain, 4) regulates insulin in type 2 diabetes, 5) reduces high blood pressure, 6) reduces impact on hip/knee/foot, 7) manages stress & mood, 8) strengthens posture, 9) improves function of heart & lungs... & so much more!
IT SEEMED LIKE I HAD UNCOVERED A GOLD MINE!

"How they move is so ELEGANT... so GRACEFUL and FLOWING!"
The results kept coming... I continued to Nordic Walk & dropped another pant size, my years-long back pain disappeared, I got core “muscles of steel”, my underarms stopped waving, I gained endless endurance, plus I was finally able to sleep like a log again! I was thrilled!
My friends wanted health & fitness benefits too, so I got myself organized to teach them. Most people do not have an athletic background & need some step-by-step instructions which was easy for me to create. They loved it & started getting results too!

Then, out of the blue I got a random call from this guy in Berlin… Dr. Klaus Schwanbeck (world class athlete, coach & innovator). He had just started a business in Toronto, Canada, selling “Nordic” style poles & needed a strong rep on the west coast. He did a Google search & found me.
Soon, I joined forces with Dr. Schwanbeck. Klaus came to Victoria about six times to train me, & discovered that with my experiences & everything I knew, he could proclaim me a MASTER INSTRUCTOR!
Tragedy struck! Dr. Schwanbeck suddenly died (from hospital complications after contracting food poisoning). We had to decide if the benefits of Nordic Walking were worth carrying on in business without our beloved Dr. Schwanbeck.
I still had the passion to help other people get fit for a lifetime with this amazing exercise. The company stayed open & I continued to teach & change the lives of over 2500 participants in the next few years.
Then COVID hit; it killed my "live-in-person" Nordic classes. I had to decide again if giving people the means to get fit & healthy with Nordic walking was worth more than the setback of COVID. YES! Without a doubt!
So I took that COVID shutdown time to distill all my knowledge into an online course I call The Insider's Guide to Lifetime Fitness.
THE RESULT OF MY STORY
This entire experience resulted in igniting a passion within me to share this do-able exercise that helps ordinary people in profound ways, regardless of where they live. The health & fitness benefits of classic Nordic Walking are massive & attainable by everyday folks. My purpose is to teach people an effective skill so that they get ALL the benefits. What I found was that a simple 3-step approach gets people to fitness results quickly. In addition, understanding how habits are created enables people to continue fitness for a lifetime.

WALKING WITH POLES
There is a critical difference!
emphasizes pushing the poles behind the body. This engages 95% of the body's muscles, & gives a lift of acceleration. It's for FITNESS & maximum results. The hands, shoulders & neck are relaxed. It develops good posture. Classic Style Nordic Walking is a specific skill to be learned. For most people, it takes some instruction to master the critical details of this style but worth it to claim 100% of benefits.

WALKING WITH POLES
Many people just grab poles & use them for hiking or because they have balance/mobility issues. It feels easy to use the poles in front of the body since these muscles are already strong & it feels intuitive to help stability in this way. The downside is that the fingers, hands, & arms are fully engaged, which causes tension & stress. This often creates more shoulder & neck pain & sore fingers/wrists. The posture is often leaning forward, creating imbalance. Anybody can grab poles & do it this way. Yes, they keep moving & feel a little more secure, & use the same amount of time, but they don't capitalize on the big benefits!
